Q:How does the Travel Medical Protection program work?
A:Travel Medical Protection provides worldwide emergency medical and dental coverage when you travel more than 150 miles radius from your Permanent Residence for up to 45 days (depending on State of Permanent Residence) of Your Covered Trip. Created to quickly provide the assistance you need in the event of an emergency, this plan:
  • Covers you up to $100,000 for unexpected emergency medical and dental treatment
  • Covers you up to $100,000 for an emergency evacuation
  • Pays for a visitors’ transportation to your bedside, anywhere in the world if you are hospitalized five days or more
  • Has no deductible or out-of-pocket expenses up to the maximum benefit level for the plan you have selected
  • Provides worldwide assistance through one 24-hour toll-free number

With Travel Medical Protection, your emergency medical and dental expenses can be paid directly to the provider whenever you have an unexpected emergency. So you don’t need to worry about fronting the cost or the hassle of being reimbursed. You'll be fully covered for benefits provided under the Plan up to the maximum benefit level selected. The benefits under this Plan are all secondary to any other insurance under which you have coverage:

  • The coverage levels available are $25,000, $50,000, and $100,000
  • Travel Medical Protection is yours for a small annual fee from $59* to $269†(depending on level of coverage and plan chosen)
  • Also, depending on state of Permanent Residence Travel Medical Protection provides monthly premium payment options from $5.50* to $23†(depending on level of coverage and plan chosen)

*A $30 surcharge applies to all persons age 65 and over who enroll in the Single Plan
†A $60 surcharge applies to all persons age 65 and over who enroll in the Joint or Family Plans.

Q:Can I add people later?
A:If you think you would like to include others in the Plan, it would be best for you to enroll them up now. That way, if they are planning to take a trip more than 150 miles radius from their Permanent Residence, you know they will have this valuable protection.

Q:Are there any geographic restrictions?
A:Coverage is effective when traveling more than 150 miles radius from your Permanent Residence, 24 hours a day for trips lasting up to 45 days(depending on State of Permanent Residence). Like the American Express Card, Travel Medical Protection is honored around the world.

Q:Does the program cover pre-existing conditions?
A:Travel Medical Protection is designed to cover unexpected emergencies. If you have not developed or been treated for a medical condition in the 60 days prior to your Covered Trip, which will take you more than 150 miles radius from your Permanent Residence, you will be covered for the benefits provided under the Plan. We recommend that you review your Description of Coverage document carefully when you receive your program materials. If for any reason you feel that Travel Medical Protection is not for you, you can terminate your enrollment at any time within the first 31 days from receiving the program materials to receive a full refund. If you decide to terminate after the first 31 days, your refund will be calculated on a pro rata basis. You may terminate your enrollment at any time by calling 1-800-297-2900.

Q:What’s not covered?
A:Travel Medical Protection is designed to cover unexpected emergencies. We recommend that you review your Description of Coverage Document carefully when you receive your program materials. If for any reason you feel that Travel Medical Protection offered exclusively to American Express Cardmembers is not for you, you can terminate at any time within 31 days from receiving the program materials to receive a full refund.

Q:Will I have to pay out of pocket for treatment?
A:With Travel Medical Protection, your unexpected emergency medical and emergency dental expenses can be paid directly to the provider (Please refer to Plan materials for specifics). So you don’t need to worry about fronting the cost or the hassle of being reimbursed. You’ll be fully covered for benefits provided under the Plan. The benefits under this Plan are all secondary to any other insurance under which you have coverage.

Q:Can I enroll my employees?
A:This is an outstanding benefit for your employees at such a low price point. Employees may enroll in Travel Medical Protection using an American Express Card issued in their name or using their personal American Express Card. Employees may enroll by calling 1-800-297-2900

Q:Why can’t I get a discount for my employees?
A:We’re sure that as you consider this benefit and the value it will add to your overall compensation package, you'll agree that the price is already very low. We’re afraid we can't offer any additional discounts for the individual plans.

Q:Will I receive Membership Rewards points when I purchase Travel Medical Protection?
A:If you are enrolled in the Membership Rewards program, you'll receive points for this purchase, just as you do for other purchases.

Q:How soon will my coverage go into effect?
A:If you call 1-800-297-2900 today to be enrolled, your coverage will become effective at 12:01 a.m. the following day, when Amex Assurance Company receives, approves and validates this Enrollment Request
